Overview
Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) may be able to help if you have an injury caused by a crime. This page explains who can apply, the treatment and recovery support ACC may provide, and the help available after sexual abuse or assault or the death of someone close to you.
What can be covered
ACC helps pay for treatment and may also be able to fund and arrange other types of assistance to help you recover such as:

managing at home

your work situation

getting to and from the places you need to be

serious injury
-
financial support after someone dies as a result of injury.

Who can apply
ACC is a ‘no fault’ scheme. This means you can apply for help whether your injury was caused by:
-
something you did, or
-
someone else’s action.
Everyone in New Zealand can apply, regardless of:
-
age or work situation
-
whether you are working, retired, studying, or not working
-
whether you live in New Zealand or are visiting.
If you are a New Zealand resident or citizen on a short trip overseas, you may also be covered in some situations.
Support for injury caused by a crime
If you suffer an injury because of a crime, ACC may be able to help pay some of your costs. This can include injuries resulting from physical assault, sexual assault or abuse and poisonings. ACC also covers:
- accidental injuries
- injuries or conditions that develop because of work
- some injuries caused by medical treatment
- some injuries caused by childbirth.
You can apply for help from ACC by visiting your local GP or another treatment provider and asking them to lodge an ACC claim for you.
Support for victim-survivors of sexual violence
If you have experienced sexual abuse or assault, ACC funds therapy and other support through its Sensitive Claims Service.
You do not have to report to police to use the Sensitive Claims Service. The sexual abuse or assault can be recent or historical.

Terms you may hear
You may hear terms like victim, survivor, or victim-survivor in reference to sexual harm.
You can choose to use what feels right to you and your experience.
In the New Zealand criminal justice system, legal documents and court proceedings generally use the terms victim and witness for the Crown to describe a person's role in the case.

Support after a death
If someone has died from an injury covered by ACC, ACC may provide financial support.
This can include:
- funeral or memorial costs
- one-off payments
- loss-of-income support.
ACC’s funeral grant has a maximum which is set every year. It was set at up to $7,990.30 for 2026. The maximum grant is determined by the date the person died.
