Overview

There are support organisations available that can help people who have experienced a crime, as well as their whānau and family, and friends who support them. 

Different organisations can help in different situations

Some can help with a wide range of issues, while others focus on specific experiences. You can choose the service that feels right for you and your circumstances. 

Support services can provide help in different ways. They can:

  • listen to you without judgement
  • help you understand and process what you're feeling
  • provide information and advice about your rights or possible next steps
  • help with practical support, like filling in forms or going to appointments
  • connect you with counselling and other support services.

General support after a crime

  1. If you would like to report a non-urgent crime, you can:

    • call police on 105
    • make a report online via the police website
    • go to a police station and talk to someone in person

  2. Victim Support(external link) provides support for people affected by crime and traumatic events, including family and whānau and witnesses.

    They can help with practical support, emotional support, information, referrals, and financial assistance through the Victim Assistance Scheme

Mental health support

  1. Mental Health Foundation(external link) lists helplines and support services available for mental health, emotional wellbeing and crisis support. 

    They provide information to help people find the right support for themselves, their whānau, family or friends.

  2. 1737(external link) offers free, confidential support for anyone in Aotearoa New Zealand.

    They can provide resources to help with your mental health and well-being.

  3. Depression and Anxiety(external link) provides information, practical advice and support options for people experiencing depression or anxiety. 

    They can help understand your mental health, explore ways to look after yourself and your whānau, and connect with support options.

  4. Samaritans Aotearoa New Zealand(external link) offers confidential support for people who need to talk about difficult feelings, including loneliness, distress or despair. 

    They have a crisis line where you can talk anonymously with trained volunteers who will listen and support you without judgement.

  5. Lifeline(external link) provides support for you or if you are concerned for someone’s wellbeing or safety.

    They can help you talk through what has happened, understand your options, and connect with local support services.

  4. Rape Crisis(external link) has offices around Aotearoa New Zealand and provides specialist support for people affected by sexual violence and their friends, family, whānau and supporters.

    They can offer support and information, including through a helpline. You can also use one of the directory tools from TOAH-NNEST or Safe to Talk to see if there is a Rape Crisis office near you.

  5. HELP Auckland(external link) provides specialist support to anyone living in Auckland who has experienced sexual abuse.

    They can support you if you have experienced sexual abuse recently or in the past.

    They can help with safety planning, support programmes and in some situations, safe housing.

Kaupapa Māori support

  1. Te Whare Ruruhau o Meri Trust(external link) is a kaupapa Māori social service provider that supports whānau affected by family violence and sexual violence. 

    They provide social work support, programmes and advocacy in Northland and Tāmaki Makaurau.

Pacific Peoples support

  1. The Fono(external link) is an Auckland-based service that provides family violence support for Pacific whānau and communities. Their services include family harm support, non-violence programmes, safety programmes and whānau resilience support.

Support for migrant and refugee communities

  2. Shakti(external link) offer specialist family violence support in several Asian, Middle Eastern and African languages as well as English.

    They offer crisis support and some regional safe housing.

  1. Gender Minorities Aotearoa(external link) offers specialist support for all queer, trans, takatāpui, and Rainbow people.

  3. RainbowYOUTH(external link) have support specialists who work with young people, their family and whānau.

Support for children and young people

  2. What’s Up(external link) by Barnardos New Zealand are a free counselling helpline and webchat service for children and teenagers.

    The counselling team provides support around topics such as mental health, family and whānau relationships or bullying.

  4. VOYCE – Whakarongo Mai(external link) supports children and young people who are in care or have experienced care, such as in foster care or residences.

  1. Aotearoa Disability Law(external link) provides free legal advice. The support they can offer depends on your situation and their capacity.

  2. CCS Disability Action(external link) supports disabled people, their families and whānau across Aotearoa New Zealand.

    They can help disabled people and whānau navigate support options, access information and build community connections. Some services may have eligibility criteria or may not be available in every area.

  3. New Zealand Relay(external link) is a free service that enables people with hearing and speech communication difficulties to use the phone.

  4. Moretalk(external link) provides communication assistance to help people with communication needs take part in a justice process. Their communication assistants work with people to help them understand, be understood, and participate.

    Moretalk has communication assistants throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and provides information for whānau, justice professionals and agencies.

    Victims may be able to access Communications Assistance depending on their eligibility and which part of the justice process they are participating in.

  5. Talking Trouble Aotearoa(external link) supports children, young people and adults with speech, language and communication needs. 
    They provide communication assistance in legal settings, including with victim-survivors, witnesses, and defendants.

    Talking Trouble Aotearoa can help people take part in legal meetings and other important conversations by supporting communication, understanding, and participation.

    Victims may be able to access communications assistance depending on their eligibility and which part of the justice process they are involved with.

Support for men and families

  1. Tautoko Tāne(external link) is specialised in supporting male survivors of sexual abuse to access a national network of support services.

    Their services include peer support, advocacy, counselling and justice support. You can find the support organisation nearest to you on their website.

  2. Men and Trauma(external link) offers support for male survivors of trauma and sexual abuse.   

    The organisation provides trauma-informed services to individuals, families and groups.

    They can help if you have been affected by identity theft, scams, or cyber incidents.

  2. Netsafe(external link) provides free support, advice and education to help people in Aotearoa New Zealand stay safe online. They can also assess and investigate complaints about harmful digital communications.

Financial help

  1. Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)(external link) funds therapy and other support through its sensitive claims service if you have experienced sexual violence.

    Their services are for vulnerable people who don’t have access to legal help, for example because of accessibility barriers or a low income.
