A crime can affect your money, property or ability to work.
This page explains financial help that may be available if you have lost money because of fraud, lost money or property after helping Police, or cannot work because of an injury caused by a crime.
Financial loss because of fraud
Your options depend on the type of fraud and what has happened.
Possible routes may include:
- report Fraud, Scam or Cybercrime to Police(external link)
- contact your bank
- insurance cover for the fraud
- getting specialist advice, such as from Own Your Online(external link) or Netsafe(external link).

Financial loss because you helped police
The Criminal Justice Assistance Reimbursement Scheme may help if you lost money or property because you helped police.
The scheme can cover property loss and property damage or destruction.
The loss must be the direct result of helping police with a criminal case where the offending is punishable by imprisonment.
This is a last-resort scheme. This means you usually need to check other options first, such as insurance. The minimum claim is $300 and the maximum claim is $30,000. In rare cases, more may be paid if not paying more would be a severe injustice.

Help if an injury means you cannot work
If an injury caused by a crime means you cannot work, ACC may be able to help with some of your lost income.
ACC may also help with:
- treatment and rehabilitation
- support to return to work
- help at home
- travel to activities related to your injury.
You can visit a doctor or another treatment provider and have them make an ACC claim for you. ACC decides whether your injury is covered and what help you can get.
